How to store your perfume?
Have you found THE ideal perfume? The scent that enhances you and reveals your inner self to the world? The perfume that, like magic, brings you well-being and self-confidence? It’s your new ally, so you need to take care of it.
While perfumes do not display an expiration date on their bottles, they can deteriorate over the years, and the rate of deterioration depends on factors such as the fragrance, the composition, and how you handle them. The average shelf life of a perfume is between 2 and 3 years. To enjoy it for as long as possible, KOESIO offers you five tips to adopt right away.
Keep your bottles away from light
The number one enemy of perfume: light! The effect can be immediate, as the degradation of a fragrance begins as soon as you unwrap the bottle from its box. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays, the juice oxidizes, may change color, and the scent may also be altered. You may have heard someone say, "My perfume has gone off" or "My perfume has turned." This is indeed due to the alteration of the essences and oxidation.
So it’s bad news for those who buy a perfume, among other reasons, for the beauty of the bottle, as it is strongly discouraged to place your perfume on a shelf where it risks being exposed to light, altering the molecules and therefore changing the scent that initially captivated you.
After purchase, the best practice would be to keep your perfume in its original packaging or in a box, all neatly stored in a cupboard.
If you notice a change in the color of your perfume, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, or Eau de Cologne, try applying a bit to your skin just to check. Unlike wine, a perfume rarely improves with time, but you never know! It’s with your nose that you’ll see if the fragrance still appeals to you.
Don’t expose your perfumes to humidity
The bathroom, a favored place for all your beauty rituals, is not the best place to store your perfumes because it’s too humid! To maintain optimal quality, you should keep your perfume dry and store it in a cupboard or dresser. Also, try to place them as far away from windows as possible, which often let humidity into the house.
Perfume doesn’t like heat
For proper storage, we also recommend choosing an appropriate temperature! Keep your bottles away from sunlight, radiators, or any other heat sources, and instead opt for cool, dry places. A fragrance is composed of dozens of essences, some of which do not tolerate temperatures above 10 degrees very well. The refrigerator, generally set between 0 and 5 degrees, is not such an unusual place for storing perfume. Alternatively, the bedroom is a good option since it is usually the least heated room in the house.
Limit the quantities of perfume when purchasing
At KOESIO, we have chosen to offer a reasonable quantity to our customers, namely 50 ml Eau de Parfums, packaged in a glass bottle and sold in a cardboard case to keep them protected from light.
We also offer 100 ml aluminum refills to ensure the Eau de Parfum is completely protected from UV rays, featuring a refill system that does not require the total opening of the spray (which would allow impurities to enter and could promote the oxidation of our juices).
Everything has been designed to give our perfumes a longer shelf life so that you can enjoy your KOESIO Eau de Parfum for as long as possible!
Travel light!
Does your perfume always accompany you, even when you’re on the go? We understand! But for proper storage, opt for a travel spray to limit quantities and avoid exposing your perfumes to temperature variations and jolts that can also alter the molecules of your precious juices. Perfume is a delicate product, so it should not be shaken.
How to store your perfume: a quick reminder
To take care of your perfumes and extend their shelf life, here’s a quick recap of the best practices:
- Remove all your perfumes from the bathroom; it’s too humid.
- Keep your bottles in a box away from sunlight, neatly stored in a cupboard.
- Choose a cool room.
- Perfumes don’t like temperature variations. Keep them away from any heat source.
- Depending on the raw materials used and the dosage chosen by certain perfume houses, the quality can vary. Not all raw materials evolve the same way. For example, a flower essence may be more resilient than a citrus essence but less so than a wood essence. The olfactory family also plays a role in the preservation of a perfume.
- Before discarding anything, try the fragrance on your skin to check the scent; it’s with your nose that you can judge.
- If you’re traveling, take small bottles with you.
